EMERGENCY UPDATE – FIRE CLAIMS LIVES

December 3, 2010

Israel prays for a miracle as the biggest fire ever in the history of the county claims many lives.

NATAL  is in emergency preparedness mode following a massive fire which started yesterday (Thursday) and has swept much of the Carmel region in North Israel.

Massive civilian casualties in the Carmel in the North (outskirt of Haifa) have been caused and there is extensive loss of life and damage to property.

The situation that has occurred in the North is a painful reminder of the difficult situation which the civilian population had to face in the Second Lebanon war of 2006 as over 14,000 people have been evacuated from their homes.

The tragedy has claimed over 42 deaths as of latest figures.

  • Most of those killed were young officers from the Prison Unit who had been sent to evacuate a prison, which was dangerously close to where the fire had spread.

Since yesterday NATAL is working in emergency mode as follows:

  • NATAL’s Emegency Hotline has been open since yesterday.
  • Israel’s  major  news channels are displaying  NATAL’s Emergency Hotline number on an ongoing basis
  • NATAL has been requested by the Prison Authorities to help with the painful task of informing the many families of those killed.
  • The  Israel Trauma Coalition, together with NATAL and other emergency organizations, opened emergency headquarters in the North. They are receiving constant updates and data from ZAKA, MADA, The Fire Fighters and the Authorities and preparing to provide services to those in need.

NATAL provides assistance to Israelis traumatized by terror or war or by mass disasters which cause a security threat to the Israeli population.

We continue to pray for the many people at risk and in danger. Our hearts are with the bereaved families and with the brave men and women putting their lives on the line to try to control this disaster.

FIRE CONTINUES TO RAGE IN ISRAEL

NATAL continues to work in the field and through the hotline to help hundreds of people turning to us for help in the worst fire Israel has ever seen. Days after the fire started, we are still waiting for a miracle.
